STUDY: NUMBER TWO
INTRODUCTION:
Luke 2 may well be the most familiar and best loved chapters in Luke’s Gospel. At Christmastime it is probably the most read and quoted chapter in all the Bible.
In chapter two Luke focuses on the early years of Jesus and in so doing we get three glimpses into Jesus’ life during His early years.
I. JESUS – THE NEW BORN [Luke 2:1-20]
A. The Anticipated Advent [Luke 2:1-7]
1. The providential decree [2:1-3]
2. The parent’s departure [2:4,5]
a. the place – “…Bethlehem…” [2:4]
b. the purity – “…espoused…” [2:5]
3. The promised delivery [2:6,7]
a. the clothing – “…the swaddling clothes…” [2:7]
b. the crib – “…a manger…” [2:7]
c. the crime – “…no room for them in the inn…” [2:7]
(symbolic of His National rejection in the future) – [John 1: 9-11]
B. The Angelic Announcement [Luke 2:8-14]
1. The place – “…in the same country…” – [2:8]
2. The people – “…shepherds…” – [2:8]
3. The particulars – “…good tidings…” [2:10-12]
4. The praising – “praising God” – [2:13,14]
C. The Agreed Action [Luke 2:15-20]
1. They hastily came to Jesus [2:16]
2. They happily confessed Jesus [2:17]
3. They honored Christ Jesus – “wondered; the shepherds…glorifying…praising God” – [2:18,19]
II. JESUS – THE YOUNG CHILD [Luke 2:21-38]
A. The Parent’s Show Respect For the Law [2:21-24]
1. The recognition of the Covenant –
“…eight days…the circumcising…” [2:21] Sign of the Covenant [Gen.17]
2. The rite of cleansing – “…days of purification…” [2:22]
3. The redemption of the child – “…present Him to the Lord” [2:22]
(this would have taken place 40 days after His circumcising)
B. The Prophet’s Show Respect For the Lord [Luke 2:25-38]
1. Part of the few serving the Lord [2:25; 2:37]
2. Promised the favor of seeing the Lord [2:26; 38]
3. Prophesied the future sufferings of the Lord [2:32,34,35; 38]
III. JESUS – THE YOUTH [LUKE 2:39-52]
A. An Overview of the Lord’s Development – [2:39-40]
1. His physical development “…the child grew…” [2:40]
2. His spiritual development “…waxes strong in spirit…the grace of God was upon Him.” [2:40]
3. His mental development “…filled with wisdom..”
B. An Observing of the Lord’s Demands – [2:41,42]
1. The Passover to be observed – [2:41; Deut.16:16]
2. The Point to begin observing – “…when He was twelve years old…” [2:42]
C. An Overlooking of the Lord’s Duty – “…about My Father’s business…” [2:43-50]
D. An Ongoing of the Lord’s Development [2:51,52]
